Pupil Evaluation Team (PET) Membership

The membership of the Pupil Evaluation Team (PET) must include:

  • A special education teacher;
  • A regular education teacher;
  • An administrator (or designee) who has the authority to ensure the provision of special education and supportive services and can commit the school's fiscal resources;
  • Other members may include: other individuals who have special knowledge or expertise related to the student;
  • An individual who can explain instructional implications of evaluation results; and
  • Caseworkers from Department of Human Services (DHS), Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation & Substance Abuse Services (DMHMR&SAS), Department of Labor and/or Bureau of Rehabilitation.
“The regular education teacher of the student, as a member of the PET, shall, to the extent appropriate, participate in the development, review and revision of the IEP of the student, including the determination of appropriate positive behavioral interventions and strategies and the determination of supplementary aids and services, program modifications, and support for school personnel.” (MSER, Chapter 101, Section 8.7, p. 41)

As a parent, you have the right to invite other persons who have been involved with your child to attend the PET Meeting. They should be individuals who know your child and have information to share that will help the PET. They can also be persons who know you and are there to support you in the process. These participants might include:

  • Stepmother/Father
  • Brothers/Sisters
  • Grandparents
  • Childcare Provider
  • Support Person
  • Note Taker
  • Outside Agency Personnel
  • Advocate
  • Family Friend

It is a courtesy to notify the school if you plan to invite other participants. You may also ask that some or all of the following be invited to attend to assist with planning efforts, such as:

  • Aides or Educational Technicians
  • Next year's Teacher
  • Last year's Teacher
  • Psychologist
  • School Social Worker
  • Guidance Counselor
  • School-based Therapist
  • Occupational/Physical Therapist
  • Agency Representative
  • In-home Support Worker
“Parents shall be notified and provided copies of evaluations or other reports to be discussed at the PET.” (MSER, Chapter 101, Section 8.5, p. 39)

Anyone who is unable to attend the meeting may send written information to share with the PET. A written report is required from evaluators who have completed an evaluation which was recommended by the PET. Copies should be shared with all members of the PET. Ideally, the evaluator should attend the meeting to explain the recommendations and answer any questions that may arise.
