Chapter 5: Pupil Evaluation Team (PET)

The Pupil Evaluation Team (PET) Minutes

You should review the Pupil Evaluation Team (PET) minutes as soon as you receive them.

Timeline for PET Minutes
PET minutes will be sent from school to parent(s) and requesting PET members within 21 school days. Timeline Graphic

It is important to verify the contents of the minutes. If you see something misleading or inaccurate, or if portions of discussions are missing, you will need to put that additional information into writing. Document your concerns and request that the school amend the PET minutes to reflect your concerns. If the school will not amend the PET minutes, request that your documentation be attached to the original PET minutes in your child's file.

Double check the PET minutes against the actual Individual Education Program (IEP) goals and objectives. Any determinations, accommodations/modifications and statement of transition agreed upon by the PET need to be included in the IEP. They are not legally binding if they appear only in the PET minutes and not in the IEP. This is why it is so important to review the documentation as soon as you receive it.

remember PET minutes are a summary of what transpired during the PET meeting. They generally include the recommendations of the PET but those recommendations are only legally binding if they are part of the IEP.

“Each unit shall maintain minutes of all PET meetings concerning the referral, evaluation, identification, programming and placement of a student with a disability. The minutes shall include the purpose of the meeting, the name and title of each member, a summary of the discussions, and the determinations of the PET. Any dissenting opinions may be included within the minutes or attached to the minutes. A copy of the PET minutes will be provided within 21 school days of the date of the meeting to the parents and any member who requests a copy. A copy will be placed in the student’s cumulative file.” (MSER, Chapter 101, Section 8.9, p. 41)
