Testing Accommodations PSAT/SAT
Primarily for Juniors and Seniors
This is something you may want to discuss at your child's Transition PET Meeting.
You should also discuss these options with your child's guidance counselor. These
accommodations can be made for a Pre-Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) and/or a
Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
It is important for students with disabilities to be aware of their rights to appropriate
testing accommodations and the necessary materials to insure this. Be sure to discuss
these options with your child's guidance counselor and request a Student Eligibility
Form to complete.
Eligibility Requirements
- Have a disability that necessitates testing accommodations
- Have documentation on file at school (IEP, 504 Plan or professional
evaluation) that supports the need for requested accommodations and
meets the Guidelines for Documentation
- Receive requested accommodations for school-based test
Guidelines for Documentation
The presence of an IEP, 504 Plan or professional evaluation does not necessarily
mean that a student is eligible for testing accommodations.
Documentation to support the need for requested accommodations must:
- State the specific disability as diagnosed
- Be current (in most cases the evaluation should have been completed
within 3 years before the test date)
- Provide complete educational, developmental, and relevant medical history
- Describe the comprehensive testing and techniques used to arrive at the
diagnosis
- Describe the functional limitations supported by the test results
- Describe the specific accommodations requested and state why the
disability qualifies the student for such accommodations
- Establish the professional credentials of the evaluator, including
information about license or certification and area of specialization
Accommodations
Students may request accommodations appropriate to their disabilities.
These might include:
- A Braille, large type cassette
- Script format of the test
- A Braille device
- A computer
- A magnifying device
- A reader to dictate test questions
- A writer to record responses
- Extended time
The PSAT and SAT are timed tests. A standard administration time is set. A specific
amount of extended time may be appropriate for a student with a disability, but"
untimed” or "unlimited” testing time is not appropriate.
The score report of a student who receives testing accommodations that include
extended time will be marked "Nonstandard Administration.”
Certain testing arrangements may be provided that do not result in a "Nonstandard
Administration” designation. These options will need to be discussed with your child's
guidance counselor prior to registration for the test taking date.
