Chapter 9: Getting Older

Roles Related to Transition Planning

Transition planning is a team approach. It is not something that the school, the parents, or the student do by themselves.

The School's Role

  • Initiate the process;
  • Include the student in the process; and
  • Establish linkages with other appropriate agencies.

The Family's Role

  • Involve their child in activities that help foster self-advocacy and independence;
  • Talk with their child about future goals;
  • Help guide their child's selection of courses to make sure they align with long term goals;
  • Seek out information about community agencies that will provide the services necessary for their child to reach their long term goals; and
  • Seek out information about course requirements for postsecondary programs.

The Student's Role

  • Prepare for the Transition Pupil Evaluation Teams (PETs) by talking with their parents, teachers, and others about; what they (the student) want to do after high school
  • Participate in the process by attending Transition planning PETs; and
  • Share their (the student's) vision for their life after high school with the rest of the team.

Maine State Education Regulations (MSER) clearly states that schools are responsible for including the student in the transition planning process. But it is also important for all members of the team to remember that the sharing of information about resources and options and the process of engaging the student in relevant activities is everyone's responsibility. Best planning has the student actively involved.

There are many ways to include your child in the planning process.

FMI: See Chapter 9 - Supplemental Information.

B. If the student does not attend, the public agency shall take other steps to ensure that the student’s preferences and interests are considered.
C. If an agency invited to send a representative to a meeting does not do so, the public agency shall take other steps to obtain that participation of the other agency in the planning of any transition services.” (MSER, Chapter 101, Section 8.8, p. 41)
