General Instructions

Navigating the CD

This CD utilizes an HTML interface, so navigation of the CD is similar to navigation of a Web site. Although you do need a Web browser, you do not need a connection to the Internet to view the contents of the CD. Unless specified otherwise, all links in this interface connect to files on the CD itself, not to files on the Internet.

Printing

The HTML documents on this CD are provided as an on-screen alternative to the original format of The Guide to Special Education in Maine. They are not intended for print, however. If you wish to print this material, please use the PDF documents included in the files/pdf folder.

Technical Requirements

This CD has been designed for use with any of today's popular Internet browsers on Windows or Macintosh computers. However, for optimal performance viewing both the HTML interface and the various PDF documents, we recommend the following minimum configurations:

Platform

Windows:

  • Pentium-class processor
  • Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, or XP
  • at least 64 MB of available RAM
  • 100 MB of available hard-disk space
  • 800 x 600, 256-color display
    (1024 x 768, true color preferable)

Macintosh:

  • PowerPC Processor (G3 or higher recommended)
  • Mac OS 8.x, 9x, or OS X
  • at least 64 MB of available RAM
  • 100 MB of available hard-disk space
  • 800 x 600, 256-color display
    (1024 x 768, millions of colors preferable)

This CD has been tested with both x86 and PowerPC versions of Linux, on hardware meeting the minimum processor and RAM requirements, as listed above. Other operating systems have not been tested.

Browser

  • Internet Explorer, version 5.x or greater and/or
  • Netscape, version 6.x or greater and/or
  • Mozilla, version 1.x or greater and/or
  • Opera, version 6.x or greater and/or
  • Safari (currently in beta)

Other Applications

This CD includes a PDF (Portable Document Format) version of each chapter in The Guide to Special Education in Maine. In order to read these documents, you must have Adobe® Acrobat® Reader® installed on your computer. If you do not have this program, you may install it from this CD, or from Adobe's Web site (requires an Internet connection). The Adobe® Acrobat® Reader® installer for Macintosh included on this CD is compressed as a Stuffit Archive (.sit file), and requires Aladdin's Stuffit Expander. There is a free version of this utility available for download from Aladdin's Web site (requires an Internet connection).
